Steve McQueen’s TAG Heuer Monaco Watch Phenomenal $799,500 Bid Price Tag

The Heuer Monaco watch worn by Steve McQueen in the movie Le Mans brought a phenomenal jaw dropping price of $799,500.

The opening reserve bid for this distinctive timepiece was $200,000 which was certainly nothing to scoff at. However, it did raise quite a few brows as a previous McQueen Monaco Chronograph auctioned by Antiquorum fetched merely $80,000.

Steve McQueen’s TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph holds a first as a racing memorabilia piece worn by a celebrity to have ever fetched such a handsome auction price at $799,500 in Hollywood. The watch does, however, hold significant historical firsts in the horlogerie manufacturing world as it was also the first square-cased watch to display an automatic chronograph and the first of Heuer’s brands to house Caibre 11 movements, which was originally released in 1969 in celebration of the Monaco Grand Prix. read more

Highlight: The Tag Heuer Monaco Collection

TAG Heuer introduced the Monaco at the Basel watch show in 1969, which has since stood the test of time. The watch was a way to introduce the new Calibre 11 movement, which was the world’s first automatic chronograph movement. The collection became hugely popular when Steve McQueen wore the blue Monaco chronograph in 1971 movie Le Mans. TAG Heuer had stopped making the Monaco for about 15 years when the brand re-introduced the Monaco in 1997.

In 2004, TAG Heuer introduced the Monaco V4, which show-cased the brand’s concept of the Pendulum and Mikrograph. This model also shows the use of belt systems over gear trains. The original Monaco V4 was built with a platinum case and was also made in rose gold version with black dial. The current model of the Monaco V4 is made of titanium and has a black case and dial. The case has a very soft look due to the use of the ceramic and titanium. The titanium and its smooth look is a nice contrast to the intricate and detailed dial. The dial is black and has full Cotes de Geneve treatment, which reflects a lot of light when looking directly at it. The dial, which is made of several parts and has gaps, shows the belts as they are working. The movement behind this dial and inside the case is Caliber V. The Monaco V4 Titanium is produced in a limited edition of 200 pieces. read more
